Baton Rouge is getting a new bagel restaurant this summer, with a NYC Bagel Franchise, a New York-based chain, opening its first Capital City location this summer on Jefferson Highway near Whole Foods.
Siblings and franchisees Aileen Depol and Marvin Casiano say despite a handful of other New York-style bagel spots in the area, their restaurant will bring an authentic and health-conscious take on the traditional deli concept.
The two expect to get designs next week and begin construction by the end of May. Casiano says they are aiming for a late June opening.
“The bagels that are being offered here in Baton Rouge do not really taste like the original bagels in New York City,” Depol says. “Most people would like to be eating healthy foods, and that’s what we’re going to be offering.”
Casiano, who worked in the chain restaurant industry in the Middle East for 11 years, says the NYC Bagel Franchise will offer online ordering, takeout and eventually delivery. The location, at 7569 Jefferson Highway, is next to Papa Johns and across the street from the Rite Aid next to Towne Center. The location will have seating for 15 to 20 people.
The restaurant chain sells around 20 types of bagels, two dozen sandwiches and gourmet coffee. Depol says their location also will offer smoothies, wraps, paninis and soups. Casiano says they will source many of their bagel ingredients from New York City.
“With the Whole Foods Market there we know people in the area are into healthy living,” Depol says.
The original NYC Bagel Franchise opened in the mid-1990s in New York City before expanding to more than a dozen locations throughout the country. A location in Houma opened several years ago, and Casiano and Depol’s location will be the second Louisiana franchise.
